Pecos River Open Spaces is a 501 (c)3 organization that seeks to conserve, protect and place wild land into conservation easement. Pecos River Open Spaces seeks land in Northern New Mexico to conserve, protect and place into conservation easement. We offer workshops, build habitat, work to re-establish plant and wildlife species and host river clean-up projects in our area. We support and enact conservation efforts to restore the riparian habitats of northern New Mexico. Our goal is to keep open spaces open, wild and alive for generations to come.
Pecos River Open Spaces (PROS) was organized by local landowners for the purpose of preserving open-space undeveloped land along the Pecos River between South San Ysidro and San Juan in the vicinity of Ilfeld and the Pecos River Retreats (formally the Rancho Soldado). The focus of PROS preservation interest is to protect a 2-mile stretch of pristine riparian habitat. PROS preserves such ecologically significant lands for the enjoyment of future generations, to maintain wildlife habitat, and to maintain open space for the benefit of the surrounding community.
The Pecos River Canyon and adjacent lands in western San Miguel County, New Mexico constitute a unique, ecologically significant and fragile resource that is under growing development pressure. Preservation of vacant and undeveloped land as natural habitat, especially in a river canyon, guarantees a secure home for a wide variety of animals and native plants. The open spaces concept guarantees that this beautiful canyon will continue unspoiled, a source of inspiration to community members into the future.
PROS, in conjunction with the Santa Fe Conservation Trust, has ensured that the protected tracts of land along the Pecos River will not be developed in perpetuity.
Conservation Easements
A conservation easement is a means to provide permanent protection from development for land having important natural values such os open space, animal habitat, biodiversity, or others, and to derive valuable tax benefits in the process. PROS works with the Santa Fe Conservation Trust on all of its easement properties.
• A conservation easement is a voluntary, permanent set of legal restrictions on land, to keep the land protected from development.
• The easement must be donated to a qualified tax-exempt conservation organization which will monitor and enforce the easement in perpetuity.
• The owner retains the full right to use and enjoy the land, and to sell it or convey it by gift or by will, but the owner and his or her (or their) successors remain bound by the terms of the easement.
